GF Walk

Local, Beloved, Annual Tradition

From the GF Walk Co-Chairs:

This year’s GF Walk will be held on Friday, March 30th, 2018 starting at the Harvard Common. Consider putting your Generous Feet to work for this Great Food Walk on Good Friday to raise Great Funding for Good Families in need. In its 34th year, the GF Walk has been raising money to support Loaves & Fishes Food Pantry and Sharing, Inc. It remains one of Loaves & Fishes’ most important annual fundraiser.

The Walk began in 1972 with Kay Doherty at the helm in Hingham, Massachusetts. She raised funds (through Sharing, Inc.) for children in need who lived in the rural South. Her walk was four times the length of Harvard’s 5-mile loop and people came from all over. Then in the mid 1980’s, a group of local women, including Charlanne van Wormer, Keyo Russell, Mary Delahunt, Ruthie Broughton and others transitioned by walking locally instead of traveling to Hingham with the proceeds of the local GFW being donated to both Loaves & Fishes and Sharing, Inc. Today 90% of the proceeds goes to Loaves & Fishes and 10% goes to Sharing, Inc.

Walk with friends or walk alone. The GF Walk has a little something for everybody. This scenic 5-mile loop begins at the Harvard Common and makes its way towards Fruitlands Museum with a spectacular, western view of the Nashua River Valley, Mt. Wachusett and the Monadnock Region. At any point, should someone need a lift, there is a “Toe Truck” which passes by frequently offering rides back to the Common. If the proceeds of the Walk and the ramble themselves aren’t enough to entice, then know that brownies and water are offered as incentive at the Rest Stop along the route. In addition, back at the finish line, the Kitchen provides sandwiches and refreshments to nourish you – a very well-received tradition for this local Walk!

If you are interested in volunteering, there are ample opportunities: at the Rest Stop, Registration Desk or in the Kitchen. Or you might wish to sponsor someone who is walking! You can download a GFW Sponsor Sheet or pick one up at a local library, post office or church (Ayer, Devens, Groton, Harvard, Littleton or Shirley).

Whether you join us as walkers, volunteers or sponsors, the GF Walk is fun and everyone makes a difference, in our own communities and beyond. We appreciate your support!
