Great Food Walk – to Benefit Loaves & Fishes Food Pantry
A Great Day to Help Nourish Neighbors
Coming soon on Friday, April 19th, 2019 is the 35th annual Great Food Walk (GFW) to benefit Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry (90%) and Sharing, Inc. (10%). Walkers are welcome anytime starting from 7:30am to 12:30pm at the Congregational Church of Harvard, 5 Still River Rd, Harvard, MA with the course starting at the Harvard Common.
Walking this scenic 5-mile loop with views including Fruitlands Museum, Mt. Wachusett and the Monadnock Region helps raise money to nourish our neighbors confronting food insecurities in the communities of Ayer, Devens, Groton, Harvard Littleton, and Shirley. In 2018, Loaves and Fishes distributed nutritious groceries to 828 households/1967 individuals – 31% were children and 10% were seniors. It is not uncommon for people to have to choose between various priorities – including food. The need for food competes directly with other essentials like housing, utilities, transportation, medical care and education.
In last year’s Great Food Walk (GFW), 122 walkers from 17 towns walked nearly 565 miles collectively and raised over $19,000 together with 60 volunteers all supporting Loaves and Fishes and Sharing, Inc. Walkers can choose to walk solo or with a team. Join with friends, family, clubs, school groups, sports teams, work colleagues or houses of worship to build enthusiasm and grow support – as more people choose to walk; so too does nourishment flourish!
To get started, download the Sponsor Sheet (PDF) and start signing up sponsors. We look forward to seeing you on April 19th!
Sponsor Sheets can also be picked up at local libraries, post offices and churches. If you are unable to walk, then consider sponsoring a walker or donating to GFW (non-profit) online. In addition, volunteers are welcome – it’s a worthwhile and fun day; nourishing not only our neighbors in need, but also one’s sense of giving.
